Ninety minutes, 100 marks. Twenty-five multiple-choice questions worth 2 marks each and ten fill-in-the-blank questions worth 5 marks each. The questions cover mathematical logic, basic coding, algorithmic thinking and AI foundations, and may involve equations and hand reasoning about algorithms rather than code you run.

You get 90 minutes and one practical problem in Google Colab. You must preprocess the supplied dataset, choose a suitable machine-learning algorithm, and submit both your trained model and your code. The judges score model performance and code quality, so a fast but messy notebook will lose marks.

The top 30 qualifier contestants are invited to an in-person camp. Three days of training are followed by a two-day selection contest, with each round lasting five hours. Four gold, four silver, and four bronze medals are awarded. The top four join Team Canada for IAIO.

Anyone in Grades 9-12 may take the National Qualifier, regardless of country. International students may also reach the camp, but only students enrolled full time at a Canadian secondary school can join Team Canada.

Two separate Canadian organisations use the CAIO acronym. This guide covers the Canada AI Olympiad run by IAIO Canada, which selects for IAIO in February. A different body, IOAI Canada, runs its own Canadian Olympiad in Artificial Intelligence that selects for IOAI in August. Check which pathway a set of dates belongs to before you plan around it.
